Magento 2 is finally here

It surely has been a journey since the first commit, I believe which dates back to the 27th November 2011! 🙂

What can I say, the public release of Magento 2 is finally here and is available to download as of today.

You can definitely see that starting 2015, there has been an enormous effort to get the project launched, looking at the number of commits above, and with myself being a long time Magento developer I welcome the release very much. It surely is a great step forward in Open Source eCommerce.

That being said, if anyone asks – should I build my shop on Magento 1 or Magento 2? I would say, at least for the next 6 months to a year, to go with Magento 1. Although there are quiet a few extension developers already shipping Magento 2 extensions, I believe on the extension front at least, the 3rd parties need some time to catch up with Magento 2 – where as version 1 is tried and tested.

I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out to see how Magento 2 goes in the wild 🙂 Only expecting to hear great things about it.
